A videography contract template that counts the rounds.

“Can we just try one more version?”

Video jobs go sideways in the edit, not on set. This template says how many rounds of changes are included, what approval means, who pays for music, and whether raw footage is part of the deal.

A starting point, not legal advice. Laws differ from state to state, so have a lawyer where you work read your version once before you rely on it.

What’s in it, and why.

  • The film and what’s delivered

The film’s length, how many versions (a main cut, a short cut, vertical clips), and the format and resolution of each.

  • Pre-production

The brief, the shot list or script, and that your client approves them before the shoot day.

  • Production

Shoot days, crew and hours. Extra days or overtime are billed at a rate written in now.

  • Rounds of changes

How many rounds are included, how notes are given, and what another round costs. The template asks for notes in one batch per round, tied to the second of the film they’re about.

  • Approval and delivery

When your client approves a cut it’s final, and the full-quality files open once the last payment is in.

  • Music

Licensed music is covered for the uses written in. If your client brings their own track, they’re responsible for the rights.

  • Raw footage

Raw footage isn’t included unless the contract says so, and how long you keep it.

  • Usage and liability

You keep the copyright and license the film to your client. What you owe if something goes wrong tops out at what was paid.

The template.

Everything in brackets is yours to fill in. The Word file has the same words, ready to change.

10. Cancellation and liability

If the Client cancels, the deposit is kept, and work already done is billed. Questions.

How many rounds of changes should a video contract include?

Two or three is common. The number matters less than writing it down and saying what a round is: one set of notes on one version, given within a set number of days.

Do I have to give my client the raw footage?

Not unless your contract says so. This template keeps raw footage out of the delivery and lets you offer it for a fee.

What does approval mean in this contract?

When your client approves a version, it’s final, and changes after that are billed. On DropYourFiles, approval happens on the same link your client reviewed, so there’s a record of when it was approved.

How does my client sign it?

Upload it to Signatures and send the link. Your client agrees to sign electronically and draws or types a signature on any phone or computer, with no account. You countersign and everyone gets the signed copy.
