How to move videos off Vimeo, folder by folder.

“Can you resend the film from 2023?” It’s on Vimeo somewhere, probably in the folder called Misc.

Downloading a Vimeo library one film at a time takes a whole afternoon. DropYourFiles reads the whole library, then moves it folder by folder into client projects.

Before you start: where are your masters?

Vimeo keeps the file you uploaded if you’re on a paid plan and have turned on Keep source video files. If not, your original is deleted. And when we bring a film over, Vimeo usually hands us its own compressed copy, not your original.

So every film that comes across is labeled Your master or Vimeo’s copy. If you still have the masters on a drive, those are the files to deliver from.

The move.

  1. Connect Vimeo

    In Bring work in, choose Vimeo and connect your account. Nothing gets written back to Vimeo. You need a paid Vimeo plan.

  2. Read your library

    Read my library lists every folder and film, up to 4,000 films at a time.

  3. Pick where each folder goes

    Tick the folders you want and choose a client and a project for each. Every film needs a home before anything moves.

  4. Check the room

    You see what the move needs against your plan before it starts.

  5. Let it run

    Each folder becomes a draft project, and you decide when a client sees it.

What Vimeo keeps.

  • Comes across

    The film, its name, its length, and Vimeo’s poster frame as a cover until ours is made. Get missing covers fixes any that didn’t arrive.

  • Stays on Vimeo

    Comments, captions, descriptions and privacy settings.

Questions.

Can I download all my Vimeo videos at once?

DropYourFiles reads your whole Vimeo library and moves it folder by folder into projects, up to 4,000 films in one read, so there’s no downloading film by film.

Do I get my original files back from Vimeo?

Usually not. Vimeo keeps your original upload on a paid plan with Keep source video files turned on, and deletes it otherwise, and what comes over is often Vimeo’s compressed copy. Each film is labeled so you know which you have.

Does moving change anything on Vimeo?

No. Nothing is written back to Vimeo, so your films stay where they are until you remove them.

Do comments come over from Vimeo?

No. Comments, captions, descriptions and privacy settings stay on Vimeo.
