How to send a client a new version of a video.

“Which one is the new one? I have three links from you.”

Every new cut as a new link means your client goes looking through texts and emails for the right one, with the round-one notes somewhere else. On DropYourFiles the new cut goes where the old one was.

Replace the file, keep the link.

  1. Upload over the old one

In the project, choose Replace with a new version on the film. It has to be the same kind of file, a film for a film.

  2. Your client opens the same link

Nothing new to send. The page shows the new cut where the old one was.

  3. The film says which round it is

Once a film has more than one version, your client sees a v2 or v3 button on it. It lists every round with its date and length, the newest marked Latest, and Compare lets your client look at two rounds against each other.

  4. Notes stay with their round

A note left on v1 stays on v1. Your client sees how many are still open on the earlier cut.

A client’s page playing the second version of a film, with a column headed Notes on v2 listing notes at 0:05, 0:11 and 0:24, each tagged v2 with the name of the person who left it.
Round two, as your client sees it: the film plays v2 and every note says which version it was left on. A sample project with invented names.
A man in a dinosaur onesie reading on the couch, under the line “and be weird again.” A client’s message, “Which one is the final?”, is struck through, and under it: “The newest round is on top.”
Each new cut goes up on the same link, newest on top, with the earlier rounds behind it.

Twenty rounds, then the oldest goes.

The last twenty versions of a file are kept. Upload a twenty-first and the oldest drops off. Your upload always goes through.

After your client approves, the earlier versions are deleted seven days later, unless you press Keep earlier versions. You get a notice before that happens. Earlier versions count toward your storage until then.

Questions.

Does the link change when I upload a new version?

No. Your client opens the same link and sees the new version in place of the old one.

Can my client watch the earlier version?

Yes. The small v2 or v3 on the film opens the earlier rounds.

What happens to notes on the old version?

They stay on the version they were left on, and your client can see how many are still open there.

How many versions are kept?

The last twenty. Seven days after your client approves, the earlier ones are deleted unless you choose to keep them.
