Vimeo review link expired? Why, and what to do.

“The link says it couldn’t find that page.” Your client, the morning of the meeting about the cut.

Most likely it reached its expiry date, or someone switched it off. Make a new review link in the video’s Share panel, with a later date, and send that. If the video was deleted, moved to another account or restricted after a plan lapsed, fix that first: a new link won’t play until the video does.

Five reasons a review link stops working.

  • It reached its date

Each review link can stop at a date and time you choose. On the Free plan the date can be up to a month out, and a link to a whole folder for review is set to 30 days unless you change it.

  • Someone switched it off

Any live link can be expired by hand with its switch in the Share panel. On a shared account, check with whoever else runs it.

  • The video was deleted

Vimeo says a deleted video’s link no longer works for anyone.

  • The video moved accounts

When videos are transferred to another account, Vimeo says their review page addresses change. The old review link goes nowhere.

  • The plan lapsed

Free allows one review link per video. If the account holds more than 3 GB, the newest videos are restricted and any link to them stops playing.

A woman holding a camera on an empty road at dawn, under the line “and shoot for yourself again.” A client’s message, “The download link expired.”, is struck through, and under it: “This one doesn’t.”
A DropYourFiles link stays open until you close it or set a date for it to end.

The fix, case by case.

  1. Expired or switched off

Make a new review link in the Share panel and send it. Choose what people with the link can do: comment, change the status to Approved, see earlier versions, download. A password needs a paid plan.

  2. Over the Free limit

Upgrade, or make room. Vimeo says restricted videos come back with their original links once you upgrade.

  3. Deleted or moved

Upload the cut again, or ask whoever holds the account now for a fresh review link.

A link that stays put between rounds.

A dead link is quick to fix. The harder part is the client who now has two links in their inbox and isn’t sure which one is the current cut.

On DropYourFiles the link stays the same for the whole job. It doesn’t expire unless you set Link expires. The next cut goes onto the same page as v2, with the notes on v1 kept apart, and the finals download from that page after approval. How to send a client a new version of a video shows a round, and how to move videos off Vimeo brings a library across, folder by folder.

Questions.

Do Vimeo review links expire?

When a date is set on them. On the Free plan it can be up to a month out, and links to a folder for review default to 30 days.

Does my client need a Vimeo account to comment?

No. Vimeo asks a guest for a name and email before the first comment.

Can a client download from a Vimeo review link?

If you allow it. Download is a switch on each link, beside comments, approval and earlier versions.

Why does my Vimeo review link say page not found?

Vimeo shows that page for a video that was deleted and for a link that is old or has changed. Check the video is still in your account, then make a new link.
