How to get client feedback on photos.

“Can you fix my hair in the third one?” Third from which end?

Put the photos on a link your client can open on a phone, and ask for two things: a heart on the ones they love, and a note pinned to the exact spot on any frame they want changed. The hearts are your selection. The pins are your retouching list, each with a name on it.

Make it easy to look through.

  • Cut it down first

Send the edit, not the card. Two hundred good frames get real notes; eight hundred get “they all look great.”

  • Split it into folders

By look, location or set, so your client can say “in Portraits” instead of “near the end.” Folders can go inside folders, three deep.

  • Show file names if you talk in numbers

Turn on File names in the project’s Settings and each photo shows its name, so IMG_0412 means the same frame to both of you.

A woman wrapped in a blanket with a mug on a misty lake dock, under the line “and hear yourself think.” A client’s message, “Where do I leave notes?”, is struck through, and under it: “Your client taps the spot.”
Your client taps the part of the photo they mean and types. The note stays pinned there.

Your client’s side.

  1. Hearts the favorites

With Favorites on in the project’s Settings, every photo has a heart. Your client taps it, and you see their favorites in Files.

  2. Taps the spot to change

Your client taps the photo where something is off and types. The pin stays where they tapped, numbered on the frame.

  3. Draws when words fall short

Draw, Arrow and Box mark the stray hair or the sign to take out, with Undo for a slip.

A photo of waves on a black-sand beach open on a client’s page, with a numbered pin on the wave, a box drawn around it and an arrow pointing down, the words Tap the photo to leave a note, and an Approve button.
A pin on the wave, with a box and an arrow drawn on it. Review copy sits faintly across the photo until your client approves. A sample project with invented names.

Your retouching list.

The notes sit in one list, each with the photo it’s on, and a reply under a note settles a question without another email. When the retouching is done, replace the old frame with the fixed one, and your client sees it in the same place on the same link.

Approve, then the full-size photos.

When your client is happy, Approve takes the Review copy mark off and opens the downloads on that link: everything, or the favorites on their own, at full size or as a smaller copy for screens. A film from the same job can sit on the page too, and the photos can be approved before it’s done. There’s more on the whole flow in photo proofing.

Questions.

How do clients pick their favorite photos?

They tap the heart on each one they want. You see them in Files, and after approving, your client can download the favorites on their own.

Can a client mark the exact spot on a photo?

Yes. Your client taps the spot and types, and can draw on it with a freehand line, an arrow or a box.

Can my client do this on a phone?

Yes. Hearts, pins, drawing and Approve all work on a phone, with no account. The first note asks for a name.
