Glossary

What is a review link.

A review link is a web address that opens a video, a set of photos or other work for someone to watch and leave notes on, usually at an exact moment or spot, without the software it was made in. It is separate from the finished files in most tools, which is why many studios end up sending a client two links.

Vimeo calls them Review Links: a page for time-coded feedback that anyone can comment on, even without a Vimeo account or a team seat, after giving a name and email. Vimeo’s free plan includes one review link per video, and a password needs a paid plan.

Frame.io now calls the same thing a Share, with a Grid, List or Reel layout. A reviewer comments without an account after giving a name and email, and the share can carry a passphrase and an expiry date.

No account for the person reviewing. Notes pinned to a time on a film and to a spot on a photo. A way to send the next round without a new address. Downloads closed until the work is approved, and a link that does not expire in the middle of a job.

What is the difference between a review link and a normal video link?

A normal link plays the video. A review link adds a place to leave notes on it, tied to the moment they are about, and on most tools a way to approve.

Does the reviewer need an account?

Not on Vimeo, Frame.io or DropYourFiles. Vimeo and Frame.io ask for a name and an email before the first comment.

Do review links expire?

On Vimeo you can set an expiry date, up to one month out on the free plan, and on Frame.io a share can have an expiration date. A DropYourFiles link stays open for as long as you keep the project.
