How to download a video from a Frame.io review link.

“I can watch it, but where’s the download?” The link came from the editor an hour ago.

Open the link, click the video once, and use the download button that appears in the bottom right corner. On a page that plays one file at a time, the button sits beside the file’s name or at the top right. You choose the original file or a smaller copy, and you don’t need an account. If there’s no download button, the person who sent the link hasn’t allowed downloads, so ask them to turn it on.

Step by step.

  1. Open the link

In any browser. If it asks for a passphrase, the sender has it. You don’t sign up to watch or to download.

  2. Pick out the video

In a grid of files, click the video once and the download button appears in the bottom right corner. On a page that plays one file at a time, hover over the name, or look at the top right of the page.

  3. Original or a smaller copy

Frame.io offers both. The original is the file the sender uploaded and can be big; the smaller copy, which Frame.io calls a proxy, is quicker and fine for watching.

  4. Save it

It lands wherever your browser keeps downloads.

Older review links.

Links made before Frame.io’s current version were called review links, and they still open. On those, the download button is at the top right, and a single download gives you the original file. Downloading several at once uses the Frame.io Transfer app, with a choice of the original or a smaller copy.

No download button, or not the file you expected?

  • Downloads are off

The sender chooses, link by link, whether people can download. An account can also switch downloads off for every link it has sent. Frame.io’s advice is to ask the sender to turn it on.

  • The link expired or was switched off

A link can be given an end date, or turned off. Ask for a new one.

  • There’s a watermark

If the sender added one, it’s in the download too. Frame.io says there’s no clean copy to download.

Don’t try to get around any of these. They’re usually there because the cut isn’t final yet, and a short message to the sender gets you the file.

Questions.

Can you download from a Frame.io review link?

Yes, when the sender has allowed downloads on that link. The button appears once you click the file, or sits at the top right.

Do I need a Frame.io account to download?

No. Share links open without signing up. Frame.io asks for a name and email when you leave your first comment.

Why is there no download button on Frame.io?

The sender hasn’t allowed downloads on that link, or their account has turned downloads off for every link. Ask the sender.

Will I get the full-quality video?

Choose the original. The other choice is a smaller copy for watching.
